Birth Certificates: The right to exist

Birth Certificates: The right to exist

Each day, thousands of children born around the world go unregistered.  They remain without basic protection due to a lack of an official identity, name and nationality.

Article 7 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child states that “the child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality and, as far as possible, the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents.” However, every day hundreds of thousands of children are born and remain unregistered, thus going without the protection of the basic right to an official identity, a name and a nationality.
