Intervida will participate in the 1st hindu Festival of Madrid’s Lavapiés neighborhood

Madrid (06/06/2008). INTERVIDA will be present with a stand at HOLI, the 1st Hindu Festival in Madrid’s Lavapiés neighborhood, which will be held from June 6-8. Active in India since 1998, INTERVIDA will be attending this event to present the projects it develops in the country, while also raising children’s awareness of child labor exploitation which afflicts 218 million children around the world.

One of INTERVIDA’s the most important efforts is to promote education for development, since together with the implementation of development projects, the organization considers it essential to raise awareness and garner society’s commitment to promoting change which underlies the fight against inequalities. Given that, and taking into account the primordial role of children in the future, the organization is attending this event with a gymkhana titled “The right to play”, in order to raise the awareness of children between 6 and 11 years old on the problem of child exploitation.

The aim of this activity is to explain to children in an fun and direct way the situation being lived by other children, and bring them closer to the reality of child labor exploitation. To do this, the organization created this game in which groups of children, symbolically walk the path from child exploitation to a better future, passing through a series of spaces in which they obtain and test their knowledge.

At the start of the game, the children adopt the role of child laborers. Then, in the green spaces they receive information and elements to pass the tests given in the red spaces, until they reach the final space, which represents a better future. This way, during the gymkhana participants learn about the importance of factors such as education, access to health services or the existence of safe water sources in people’s development. At the same time, they test children’s capacities, such as retention, cleverness, collaboration, aim and attention.

At the same time, all those who visit the INTERVIDA stand, located in one of the jaimas installed for the occasion, can learn about the organization’s efforts and enjoy a photography exhibition on its projects in India. Attendees can also purchase solidary products elaborated in this Asian country.

HOLI is a multicultural event organized by the company MR. MONKEY for the District Center of the MADRID CITY HALL, and arises from the interest in making various aspects of Indian culture known in a participative and urban setting. From June 6-June 8, festival attendees will enjoy various activities ranging from a Bollywood film showing to gastronomic events in which they can sample Indian cuisine and learn about the various activities being carried out by NGOs in India.
