April 23rd, World Book Day

Intervida celebrates Saint George’s Day in the streets of Barcelona raising awareness on the consequences of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children

Madrid (23/04/08). One year more, INTERVIDA celebrates World Book Day in the most solidary way, operating a stand on Barcelona’s Portaferrisa Street, encouraging visitors to enjoy this day, following the tradition with roses and books while getting to know about the organization and its development projects.

People who pass by the INTERVIDA stand can purchase a rose for two euros. The profits obtained from this sale will be designated to the projects the organization carries out in Cambodia against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC). Also, following the tradition, together with the rose and information on this project, the organization will be handing out free samples of the book “INVISIBLE LIVES”, edited by INTERVIDA and a pin from the GIVE THEM A VOICE campaign which the organization has been running since 2006 to raise society’s awareness about the seriousness of child sex tourism, a growing industry in Third World countries.

INTERVIDA has been working with other local organizations in Cambodia since 2005 to address the problem of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children at its roots alongside the people who are closest to the harsh reality of the streets. In this sense, the organization investigates cases of the sexual trafficking of children and has managed to rescue dozens of victims of this offense and provide them with appropriate treatment offered by trained staff. The sustainable development of the communities where these children come from is also being undertaken; if the parents can overcome their extreme poverty, they may not see the need to send their children into sexual activities.

The raising of social awareness is just as important as the direct actions undertaken with the victims. Along these lines is “INVISIBLE LIVES”, a book written and edited by INTERVIDA which compiles information and data, and a analysis of the causes and consequences of the different forms of commercial sexual exploitation of children as well as a description of the main countries where this problem exists. The book refers to documented sources specialized in this area, from international institutions and political authorities to supranational organizations such as UNICEF, FAO, ILO and UNDP.

The book aims to serves as a reference tool for those individuals, professionals, experts and people interested in CSEC who wish to easily find information which may be used in developing their work activities. Increasing knowledge about the commercial sexual exploitation of children can contribute to the common aim of raising awareness about this serious problem.
