More than 6,000 books will travel to Intervida’s cultural centers in El Salvador thanks to the solidarity of fans of F.C. Cadiz
Madrid (21/04/2008). Thousands of people have come to Ramon de Carranza Stadium answering F.C. Cadiz Foundation’s call to collaborate with INTERVIDA. The aim was to collect the most used children and adolescent’s books as possible so that these could be sent to the Cultural Centers which the organization runs in El Salvador. During the three day campaign, the team of F.C. Cadiz volunteers have collected over 6,000 books.
The next step in this initiative is to send these books to El Salvador. For this step, F.C. CADIZ and INTERVIDA count on the support of NACEX, the transportation agency which will transport the books from Cadiz to Barcelona, where INTERVIDA’s headquarters are located. The books will then be sent to El Salvador.
The books were collected under the framework of the 3rd School Meeting, held on April 16th, to which Cadiz’s football club invited all schools in the province of Cadiz to participate; 4,000 students participated in the event, donating used children and adolescent’s books. This event, which is held each year, is aimed at teaching children to enjoy football without violence, encouraging them to root for their favorite team without resorting to insults or defamations, but rather by instilling in them respect for others, comradeship and teamwork. At the same time, it is also interesting to teach children the importance of practicing some kind of sports activity from an early age.
Additionally, starting on April 14th, the F.C. Cadiz offices, on the ground floor of the grandstand of Ramón de Carranza stadium, has been open to collect books donated by club members.
INTERVIDA’s Cultural Centers project is developed in various countries, among them El Salvador, and seeks to address the problems which are faced by the adolescent population, particularly those living in rural areas, given the scarce or inexistent opportunities for development offered by their community due to poverty and a lack of resources. With the 14 Centers in El Salvador, the organization supports over 30,000 adolescents and young people between 12 and 25 years old and helps to create a space which enables them to access training, recreational and leisure activities based on the protagonism of the young people themselves. INTERVIDA is aware of the need for young people to have spaces which address their needs and interests in this phase of their lives, and the need to have a space where they can enjoy all types of activities and trainings, receive information relevant to their lives, access culture, organize events, and meet, chat, and simply, hang out.
At the same time, one of the necessary characteristics of the Youth Center is the implementation of a management model which leans towards sharing this responsibility with the young people themselves in a long-term process which will combine action and reflection, training and putting into practice.
